Texas Vehicle Inspection: What's Required in DFW?

Quick answer

Since January 1, 2025, most non-commercial Texas vehicles no longer need an annual safety inspection, but cars registered in DFW counties such as Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Rockwall and Kaufman still need an annual emissions (OBD) test. An illuminated check engine light is an automatic fail.

Texas Vehicle Inspection: What's Required in DFW?

What changed in 2025

Texas House Bill 3297 eliminated safety inspections for most passenger vehicles and replaced them with an inspection program replacement fee at registration. Commercial vehicles still require safety inspections.

What the emissions test checks

  • Check engine light status
  • Stored diagnostic trouble codes
  • Readiness monitors
  • Gas cap integrity on some vehicles

How to pass

Fix the check engine light first, then drive 50–100 miles so readiness monitors complete before testing.
